INDIVIDUAL COACHING SERVICES Q&A

How did I get started in this business?

As a manager for over 21 years, a big part of my job was coaching the individuals who worked on my staff. I loved facilitating the best out of others, rather than “telling them what to do”. I guess you would say that somewhere in that position I started coaching. However, my big “ah ha” moment came when I had been asked by some friends to coach them on making a decision around retiring. It suddenly occurred to me “why not be a coach?” It would allow me to take the best part of the work I had done and make that my job.

When I started seriously considering what kind of coach I wanted to be I felt my choices, based on my experience, would be: 1- management/executive 2- retirement 3- career. I kind of merged retirement and career because my realization was that retirement was really mostly about changing your career.

My reason for focusing on careers had to do with what I call having experience from all sides of the hiring desk as well as retiring at the early age of 49. When I say “all sides of the hiring desk” I’m talking about the following experiences: - I was a vocational instructor where the primary part of my job was to set up work situations/assignments for on-the-job training for students – I then worked as a head hunter – I managed the Oregon College Recruiting program – As a senior manager I hired countless numbers – I was Responsible for the Staffing organization- and retired. Clearly, I had some insight about both hiring and careers so it was a natural fit.

I know some people get a curious look on their face about the retirement component in all of this. Essentially, I look at retirement as making a decision about your career. These days when retirement accounts have shrunk, more and more people are not halting work but are making decisions about what kind of work they want to do next. As a person who has been through multiple career changes, including retirement I really feel an affinity with people of all ages wanting to make these kinds of decisions.

Who are my clients?

My clients range in ages from 20 to 65+ (some don’t tell). The primary client I work with is someone who is at a point where they need to make a decision about their career. The range of decisions may be: - at the beginning or first career decision-in the career needing professional growth- a career change- retirement alternatives-job search. My clients live all over the map. I coach exclusively over the phone which means there is no geographic limitation, especially these days with our technology.

How am I different from other career coaches/consultants?

I think I’m different in two ways. The first way is that I bring a unique variety of experiences and insights to play in the career arena. I have seen the hiring process from every possible perspective there is. I know what hiring managers think and do. I know how HR/staffing works and think. That has allowed me to have a realistic perspective on the best approaches to take based on how things “really” work. My clients benefit from this background and it informs my coaching and processes.

The second way I think differentiates me is my deep business background, process knowledge and personal change technologies. My specialization was in being able to change systems, process and organizations to produce specific end results. I have used these skill sets to formulate some powerful programs for making career choices and job search strategies.

Who is the program best for and what is expected of me?

I’ll admit it. There are some people that aren’t cut out for these programs. The best type of person is someone who is ready to make a change, is open to the possibilities, is ready to do the work necessary to get results and is committed to their goals. I am not a “fu-fu” coach, although I’m soft and cuddly. I work best with people who want results and are willing to work to get them.

What’s expected of my clients is that they make and meet their commitments, show up on time and do the work. I love working with people that have a sense of humor and enjoy seeing their own growth.

What is your one on one program and what does it include?

Working one on one with me includes a 45 minute session of coaching and a 5 minute wrap up and review of next actions. There is usually homework to do between sessions for you to ensure ongoing progress is made. Our phone meetings are devoted to focusing on topics that will move you forward toward your goal whether it is working on a process step or helping you to formulate an end result. Between sessions we can and do conduct email conversations to ensure movement if you are stuck or want me to review your work. As well, I provide you with materials and resources as needed throughout the process.

What results can I expect and how quickly?

Each person is different in terms of various circumstances that drive their results. I have had clients get to decisions very quickly and others it has taken several months. One thing you can expect from day one is work, movement and results. We will identify your goals in the first session and from that point forward your results will be based on the time you devote to the work, how frequently our sessions are scheduled and how your work unfolds.

How long would I do coaching?

I prefer that clients commit to a minimum of 3 months to ensure we have worked together long enough to start seeing results. For some people the length of coaching can be longer than that based on the client’s desires and preferences. Each session is 50 minutes long which includes a 5 minute wrap up and review of next steps. The frequency of our sessions is up to the clients desire to accomplish results. The more frequently we meet, the faster the movement toward their goals. Frequency is either weekly or every other week. I have had clients keep coaching almost indefinitely as they find the process a productive way to stay focused on their goals as they develop new growth opportunities.

How much does it cost and how do I pay?

I prefer to be paid for a full 3 months of coaching which are 9 appointments for $900. I offer clients a 10% discount for paying the full fee up front, making the total fee $810 for a savings of $90. If the client wants to continue with coaching from that point, the charge is $300 for each month following. I will accept paying by the month at $100 per session with a minimum of 3 sessions paid up front and scheduled. All fees include the individual 50 minute coaching sessions, between session’s unlimited email and access to all materials. Payments for services are credit card only and made on my website for easy access and security.

What do I do if I’m ready to commit and want to work with you?

You send your request to me to set up an initial consultation appointment. During the consultation we will review your situation and discuss how these programs will fit with your needs. Assuming this is a mutual fit, we will schedule your appointments and I will send you a client welcome packet of materials.
